Federalization Process and Informed Journalism
Devsuits, in partnership with Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), Surkhet, organized a 3-day training on ‘Federalization process and informed journalism’ in Surkhet on 14-16 August 2019. Twenty journalists from 10 districts of Karnali Province participated in the training. The initiative was supported by International IDEA.

Project Background
In response to the evolving political landscape of Nepal, Devsuits, in collaboration with the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) Surkhet, organized a specialized training workshop focused on the federalization process and informed journalism. This initiative, held over three days from August 14 to August 16, 2019, aimed to enhance the capacity of journalists in Karnali Province to report effectively and accurately on federalism and its implications.

Objectives
The primary objectives of the training were designed to enhance the overall capabilities of journalists in Karnali Province concerning the federalization process and informed journalism. The initiative aimed to:

Enhance Understanding of Federalization
Provide journalists with a thorough grasp of the federalization process in Nepal, including its governance structures and implications for local administration.
Promote Informed Journalism
Improve the ability of journalists to report on federal issues with accuracy and depth, ensuring that their coverage is clear, balanced, and well-informed.
Strengthen Local Media Capacity
Build and enhance the capacity of local journalists to effectively cover federal issues, thereby improving the quality and impact of journalism in the region.
Activities
Federalization Workshops
Interactive sessions on federalization principles, including governance and administrative changes. Facilitators provided presentations and engaged participants in discussions and exercises to enhance their understanding of federalism.
Reporting Exercises and Case Studies
Hands-on activities where participants created news stories on federal issues, using real-world case studies. Feedback sessions helped refine reporting skills and strategies for covering federal topics effectively.
Media Ethics Seminar
A seminar on ethical journalism and best practices for reporting on federal matters. Experts discussed accuracy, balance, and handling sensitive issues, with practical tips and role-playing scenarios to reinforce ethical reporting.
