Project Background
The “Supporting Collective Voice and Action against Caste Discrimination in Nepal – SAJHA AAWAJ” project was a collaborative effort co-funded by the European Union and implemented by the Nepal National Dalit Social Welfare Organization (NNDSWO), Finn Church Aid (FCA), and the Media Advocacy Group (MAG). This project aimed to address the deeply entrenched issue of caste discrimination in Nepal, with a focus on empowering marginalized Dalit communities.
Objectives
The “Supporting Collective Voice and Action against Caste Discrimination in Nepal – SAJHA AAWAJ” project outlined several key objectives aimed at empowering marginalized Dalit communities, enhancing their capacities, and fostering an inclusive society. These objectives were strategically designed to address both the systemic and socio-cultural aspects of caste discrimination. By engaging stakeholders at various levels, the project sought to create sustainable changes in attitudes, policies, and practices.
Empowerment of Dalit Communities
The project aimed to strengthen the capacities of Dalit communities by providing them with tools and resources for effective advocacy. This included organizing training sessions on human rights, leadership, and public speaking to enable Dalit individuals to articulate their concerns and participate actively in decision-making processes.
Strengthening Legal Frameworks
A key objective was to support the implementation of existing legal provisions against caste discrimination. The project worked closely with legal experts and civil society organizations to monitor the enforcement of anti-discrimination laws, provide legal aid to victims of caste-based discrimination, and promote access to justice.
Promoting Inclusive Policies
Utilizing media as a powerful tool for change, the project sought to raise awareness about the issues faced by Dalit communities and to challenge discriminatory norms. Through partnerships with local and national media outlets, the project aimed to highlight success stories, disseminate information about Dalit rights, and foster a public dialogue on caste discrimination.
Activities
Community Advocacy Workshops
The Community Advocacy Workshops will train Dalit leaders and activists in advocacy skills, legal rights, and effective communication. These sessions will enable participants to organize community events, lead campaigns, and engage with policymakers, thereby strengthening their ability to advocate for their rights and combat caste discrimination.
Legal Aid Clinics
The Legal Aid Clinics will provide free legal support to Dalits facing caste-based discrimination. By offering legal advice and assistance, these clinics will help victims navigate the justice system and ensure that anti-discrimination laws are effectively utilized.
Media Campaigns and Advocacy Events
The Media Campaigns and Advocacy Events will use radio, TV, and social media to raise awareness about caste discrimination and promote Dalit rights. Through impactful stories and public events, these initiatives aim to challenge discrimination and drive policy changes.
